In my mind I'm a clever and thoughtful gift-giver. In reality, sometimes I give people Target gift cards and duplicate pairs of dangly earrings. I like the idea of putting together little "sets" of items that are useful, coordinated and personalized. If I plan ahead, this usually winds up saving money, too. 

For kids, I've discovered that mixing something exciting (baseball) with something that's maybe not-so-exciting (writing thank you notes, learning to read) can be a sneaky way to attract their interest.
